Instructor: Peter Ross

We welcome Master Blacksmith Peter Ross in to our forging studio this fall. Peter is currently based in North Carolina, but was previously the Master Blacksmith at the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation in Virginia, a restored 18th century town. His 25 year position allowed him to re-discover and practice the study of blacksmithing through the historical processes used in the Colonial era. Peter is a regular instructor at craft schools across the country and demonstrates for national blacksmithing organizations. This workshop will introduce the process for forging and assembling a compass. These basic measuring tools have been used by artisans for centuries and are still quite useful today in any workshop. We will focus on the design and construction of traditionally styled tools from the early 1800’s while encouraging students to incorporate their own interpretations. The emphasis will be on basic hand forging skills at the anvil and hand finishing skills at the vise. While the finished tools appear fairly straightforward, expect to practice the forgings several times as part of the learning process. In addition to the assembly and function requirements, these tools offer ample opportunities for decoration, for which we will also cover basic file use and traditional decorative file work techniques. Once the basic procedure has been learned, students may make additional variants, such as calipers, dividers, etc. Students with advanced skills may elect to work on more complicated versions. The Friday of this week will include a free tour of the NUCOR Steel Mill in West Seattle for all interested students. More details will be provided in the class. Some experience recommended, Beginning Blacksmithing or higher. Supply Fee : Included in Tuition
