In this workshop, students will learn how to cast glass by sculpting forms out of clay, pouring refractory molds around the forms, removing the clay and melting glass back into the empty cavity, in kilns. Hands-on time, in addition to daily demonstrations and lectures on mold making, loading kilns, firing schedules, and finishing pieces in the cold shop, will round out this in-depth course on kiln-casting. At the end of the course students should feel confident in continuing to work independently with this process, through the use of their own studio, at Pratt as an independent user, or a combination of the two. In addition, there will be an introduction to lost-wax casting, for those interested in learning about more complicated castings. A field trip off campus will include visits to local studios and galleries. Come prepared, as day one will kick off with sculpting forms out of clay! All skill levels are encouraged to apply.
