Instructor: Daniel Beck

Daniel is currently the Iron Studio Coordinator at the Penland School of Craft, where he has worked since 2011, facilitating blacksmithing, fabrication, foundry, and sculpture workshops. He maintains a studio practice at his shop in Spruce Pine, NC and is in his third year teaching incarcerated artists through the AMCI/Penland Prison Arts Partnership. In this four day workshop students will move through processes of creating a small sculpture using steel sheet and bar material. The workshop will begin by sharing inspirations through a series of exercises geared towards developing subject matter as a driving force for sculpture. Students will expand on these ideas through sketches in paper, wire and foam. Within the first day, students will begin translating these models to cut and formed steel. Student projects will dictate specific technical demonstrations, which will include sheet forming, bending, TIG and MIG welding, grinding and finishing processes. This workshop is designed for all levels, beneficial to the beginner as well as more experienced metalworkers looking for different approaches to designing sculpture. Prerequsite : Forging and basic welding experience advised.
