This is a one session online class that will teach woodturners how to make sea urchin shell ornaments. The goal of the class is to teach students to make beautiful, unique ornaments. The instructor, David Lutrick, wrote an article for a national woodturning publication in 2009 on this project and it has become a nationwide favorite project for woodturners. He now wants to share the magic of creating it with online students. Students will learn how to make wooden finials and caps and how to join these with the sea urchin shell. A technique for strengthening the shell will be explained. Finials and caps will be spindle-turned from hardwoods and hangers will be installed. Class time will rotate between 10-15 minutes of live demos and students doing work on their lathes. Plan to have a place to put your laptop/phone to film yourself on the lathe as your instructor will offer feedback as you turn. Students are welcome to ask questions as they come up. The class will be maxed at 5 people to allow for quality feedback during everyone's turning time. Prerequisite: Beginning Woodturning. Students must provide their own lathe and tools. Supply kits with blank finials, caps, dowels, and sea urchin shells will be mailed to students. Sufficient supplies for two ornaments will be provided. Class enrollment ends 14 days before class start to allow time for shipping, no international shipping. This class will be hosted on Microsoft Teams, the class will be recorded, students will have access to the class for 48 hours after the class ends. A fully supply list will be emailed.
