This online class will introduce students to the techniques of lost wax casting in glass. Students will first make their own small-scale wax sculptures, then learn how to successfully set them up to invest them in plaster to turn their sculptures into cast crystal. At the end of the third class students will return their newly invested waxes to Pratt to be cast in glass. The fourth class will be an observation of the casting, where students will get to learn the firing process and watch as their investments are cast. This will be a fast-paced class, held over Microsoft Teams. There will be time in class, after demos, to work and ask questions, but students may wish to continue developing their projects between classes to refine them as well. Class content will be available to students for 48 hours after class finishes to allow students to review as they work outside of class. Supply kit will be available for pick up (no shipping) on 2/24 1:00 pm – 3:00 pm or 2/28 1:00 pm – 3:00 pm. Each student will also need to provide their own limited set of tools. A detailed supply list is available upon request and will be emailed prior to class. Supply kit includes some rental tools (Stainless Steel Casting Flask and Sprue Base) from Pratt. Detailed returning schedule will be discussed during the class. The deadline for registration of the class is February 15th.
