Learn to add the color and sparkle of stones to jewelry designs without using a torch! In this class we will focus on cold connections instead of solder. If you are new to setting stones, these techniques are a great introduction. If you’re more experience, cold settings can expand your design repertoire, or give you the option of working in studio that isn't equipped with a torch. Your instructor will guide you through a progression of capturing stones and setting them using tabs, rivets and tension settings. You will learn a variety of riveting styles for different uses and how to properly set them. Although the class focuses on setting cabochons and faceted stones, these techniques can also be used to capture materials that are heat sensitive as well as enameled elements and other found objects. Prerequisite: None. Supply Fee: $35.
*Students will pick up a supply kit from Pratt prior to the first class. Students will need to provide their own handtools based on a shopping list provided (this includes common jewelry tools such as a saw, files, etc, and a few more specialized items for stonesetting). Students receiving Tuition Assistance may request to borrow a tool kit from Pratt. Please register at least one week prior to the class start date to have time for getting tools and supply kits.
